Stainless Steel Linear Actuators, Left or Right Hand Thread

For our 100th post, and the last one of 2010, I'm here to tell you about our new series GN 291-NI Linear Actuators with left or right hand thread.
The metric-sized, RoHS compliant linear actuators have a guide tube made of stainless steel. The trapezoidal threaded shaft and thrust ball bearings are of stainless steel, the follower nut is steel with a gun metal finish, and the end cap is plastic. The actuators are offered in four types: single shaft end with right hand thread, single shaft end with left hand thread, two shaft ends with right hand thread, and two shaft ends with left hand thread.

Along with J.W. Winco’s extensive range of tube clamp connectors, there are a number of additional components for mounting on linear actuators to construct slide units. In order to measure the movement and position of the slides, digital as well as analog position indicators can be added. Also, the guide tube can be equipped with a longitudinal scale along the slot.

GN 285 Swivel Clamp Connector Joints

As we introduce to you our many new tube connection components, I'm here today to tell you about our series GN 285 Swivel Clamp Connector Joints.
The metric-sized, RoHS compliant connector joints are made of aluminum and available in two finishes: black powder-coated textured finish and matte shot-blasted finish (natural aluminum color). DIN 912 zinc-plated steel cap screws and DIN 985 zinc-plated steel nylon insert hex nuts are included.

GN 285 swivel clamp connector joints are an assembly of two GN 275 swivel clamp connectors. Since the swivel clamp connectors have an identical swivel width, all bores can be combined as needed. The clamping bore is machined and designed for construction tubings GN 990 or DIN 2391, DIN 2395 and DIN 2462 respectively.

In the standard version, the clamping force of the clamp onto the tube is achieved via the socket cap screws and hex nuts with nylon insert. Stainless steel screws are also available, as well as kits that include adjustable levers, spacer bushings and hex nuts for use in lieu of the cap screws.

WN 991 Inch Plastic Tube End Plugs, Round or Square

As we introduce you to various items in our new complete line of tube connection and conveyor components, today we focus on WN 991 Plastic Tube End Plugs.
These RoHS compliant tube end plugs come in inch sizes, and in both round and square versions. They are made of polyethylene plastic in a matte black color, and are designed to fit multiple tube gauges with a secure fit.

The tube end plugs are ideal for office and patio furniture, tubular racks or structures, appliances, exercise equipment, or anywhere a finished look is needed. The caps feature multiple horizontal ribs with built-in flexibility for easy installation and a secure fit.

GN 990-AL Construction Tubings

In the weeks and months to come, we'll be taking a closer look at many of the great new components recently added to our product line as part of our new complete line of tube connection and conveyor components.  Today we begin with
GN 990-AL Construction Tubings for tube clamp connectors.

These RoHS compliant tubings come in inch sizes in round versions, and in metric sizes in both round and square versions. They are offered in either untreated, plain finish aluminum, or clear anodized aluminum. The sawed end surfaces are untreated, but deburred.

Tolerances for the outside diameter of the round construction tubings comply with the requirements for split mono-block connector clamps. Inch tubing complies with EN 754 and EN 755. Metric tubing complies with DIN 2391, DIN 2395 and DIN 2462.

The tubings are offered in a variety of diameters. Inch sizes come in standard lengths of 12, 36, 72 and 98.4 inches, with other lengths, in 1 inch increments up to 96 inches, also available upon request. Metric sizes come in standard lengths of 300, 1000, 2000 and 3000 millimeters.

J.W. Winco also offers inch and metric sized round and square tubings in zinc-plated, blue passivated steel, as well as metric sized round and square tubings in untreated stainless steel (European Standard No. 1.4301, American Standard Series 304).

We are proud to announce the launch of our new comprehensive line of tube connection and conveyor components, as well as the release of our new Tube Connection and Conveyor Components Manual.

This 276-page, full color catalog features the two new product lines that we have greatly expanded, along with previously sold related products. In combination, the components included in the catalog offer complete solutions for tube and conveyor assemblies for all industries.

Our tube connection components line includes a full array of inch and metric connector clamps, tube supports, connector joints, construction tubing, swivel clamp bases, sensor holders, tube end plugs, linear actuators and connectors, digital position indicators, drive/transfer units, gear wheels and housings.

Retaining Magnet Assemblies

We're delighted to announce a brand new product line:  metric-sized Retaining Magnet Assemblies.  We're offering 18 different types of magnet assemblies, to accommodate any application. 

The use of retaining magnet assemblies is a simple solution for no-wear magnetic holding of an object.  Due to their structure, these magnet assemblies have only one magnetic pulling force level. The full magnetic force is focused directly onto the adhesive surface by means of iron magnetic poles.  The spatial effect of the magnetic field is limited by shielded systems, so that surrounding objects are not magnetized.

Among the types of magnet assemblies we offer are flat gripper types, like the GN 50.1 Disc-Shaped without Thread in steel, which you see to the right...

GN 666.4 Tubular Arch Handles

Our latest new product to share with you is our GN 666.4 series Tubular Arch Handles.

These handles are RoHS compliant, come in metric sizes, and are available in both aluminum and stainless steel versions. The handle legs are matte black glass filled nylon plastic (polyamide) with tapped inserts for mounting that are zinc plated steel, molded-in. The cover caps are matte black nylon plastic. The handle tubing is available in aluminum with a either a “Black-Pebble Finish” electrostatically applied powder coat or a natural anodized finish. The stainless steel version of the tubing has a matte shiny finish.

GN 666.4 handles are an advanced development of GN 666 tubular handles with straight tube, offering a curved shape for a modern industrial design. The legs have maximum heat resistance of 110°C (230°F). Various metric size fasteners and kit packaging are available upon request.

GN 833 and 833-NI Steel and Stainless Steel Toggle Hook Latches

Here's the scoop on our GN 833 and 833-NI Steel and Stainless Steel Toggle Hook Latches.  The metric sized latches are RoHS compliant. The GN 833 version is zinc-plated steel, yellow passivated, and the GN 833-NI version is stainless steel, European Standard No. 1.4301 (American Standard Series 304). They have a load capacity of 500 FH[N].

These toggle hook latches are used for the secure holding of flaps, container lids, etc. They lock securely over the center and are thus vibration proof. The components to be linked are held in position by the elasticity of the pulling latch.

GN 185 Countersunk Washers with Plastic Cover Disk

Our latest new product we'd like to introduce to you is our GN 185 Countersunk Washers with Plastic Cover Disk.


These RoHS-compliant, metric size washers are made of stainless steel, European Standard 1.4305 (American Standard series 303). The cover disks are made of white technopolymer (Polyamide PA). The washers are used for shrouding screw joints when a visually appealing finish is desired. The plastic disks serve to avoid damage to finished surfaces.

AN 100 Tripod Support Bases

Today we're sharing with you about our new AN 100 series Tripod Support Bases.  These RoHS-compliant bases are compatible with both inch and metric components. The support base is black reinforced polyamide. The threaded bushings for leveling feet are nickel-plated brass, and the fasteners are stainless steel.

These tripod support bases are normally used with aluminum, plated steel or stainless steel tubing and either side mounting brackets AN 200 or AN 205, or support bases AN 300 or AN 305, also available from J.W. Winco. We also offer a variety of leveling feet or casters that can be used with these bases.

MN 130 Series Pneumatic Power Clamps

We're focusing today on one of our line of Pneumatic Power Clamps from Misati, S.L., specifically the MN 130 model.

These patented, smaller profile, high clamping force, reduced air consumption, super-efficient clamps are a revolutionary approach for applications in assembly, verification, handling, robotics, machining, welding, etc.

The RoHS-compliant, metric size clamps are made of C45 hardened steel with a black oxide finish. They have a maximum pressure of 10 bar and work pressure of 6 bar. Having a reduced size, these clamps achieve higher holding forces than other clamping options. The accompanying standard accessories can adapt the clamps to most all applications, such as molded, cast or machined surfaces, caustic environments, sensor requirements, etc.

J.W. Winco Wins "How I Got My Business Out of Hot Water" Challenge

We’re proud to report that our company won second prize in a competition from the Independent Business Association of Wisconsin (IBAW) and Reliable Water Services LLC. The three winners of the “How I Got My Business Out of Hot Water” business challenge were announced at the IBAW monthly meeting on June 18, 2010.

The winning essay was written by your humble blogger, and described how Upper Management at J.W.Winco reacted when the economy and the industrial manufacturing industry declined in 2008. “Until then, our business had been growing steadily. In fact, we just built a 40 percent expansion and redesign of our facility in New Berlin,” the essay states. “Switching gears so suddenly from a growth outlook to survival mode was a huge challenge.”

The essay described methods we used to ride out the storm, including upper management salary reductions, using employees for tasks previously outsourced, finding more cost-effective shipping, and chipping away at operating costs. It also explained the lessons learned during the recession, which we continue to apply now that the crisis is over.

“We had new focus on things like return on investment, efficiency, cooperation, and enthusiasm for selling,” explains the essay. “We know now that we have to apply consistent effort to constant improvement, and never assume the status quo is good enough.”

GN 924.3 Two-Spoked Flat-Faced Handwheels with Retractable Handle

We previously posted about our new flat-faced handwheels.  In this new line, we offer GN 924.3 Two-Spoked Flat-Faced Handwheels with Retractable Handle, a variation that can be ideal for applications where you don't want the handwheel's cranking handle to get in the way.

These handwheels are RoHS compliant and come in both inch and metric sizes. They are distinguished by their modern, flat-faced design and recessed handles. The handwheel body is pressure die-cast aluminum with a powder coated matte black pebble finish or a silver textured finish. Rim is concentric and square to bore. The locking retractable handle has a zinc plated steel threaded spindle, a black oxide steel retracting mechanism and matte black nylon plastic hand piece. The removable plastic cover shrouds the assembly hardware such as screws and countersunk washers, as well as the shaft end.

When the handle is pulled upward into operating position, it locks into a conical recess. To fold it down, draw the handle back from the recess and lay it down into the neutral position inside the handwheel spoke. A compression spring holds the handle in both positions.

GN 918.5 Stainless Steel Eccentrical Cam Units

Sharing with you another of our newer products, GN 918.5 Stainless Steel Eccentrical Cam Units.  The metric sized cam units are RoHS compliant. The cam is chemically nickel-plated stainless steel. Hexagon threaded bolt and washer are tempered stainless steel, chemically nickel-plated. The ball lever handle is matte shot blasted stainless steel with a black phenolic plastic ball knob.

These cam units have a relatively long movement and high clamping force, providing rapid and safe clamping and release. The cam offers the advantage of the clamping force acting over the entire clamping area (i.e., maintains the clamping force in all angular positions). The lever handle is linked to the cam via mating serrations which allow the positioning of the lever in a preferred position. The eccentrical cam can also be used with T-slot nuts on machine beds, or as stepless adjustable end stops. If the washer is removed, the eccentrical cam can be clamped directly to its support.

GN 350.1 Short Model Leveling Sets

Please welcome to the blog another new product:  GN 350.1 Short Model Leveling Sets.

These RoHS-compliant, metric sized leveling sets are made of zinc plated, blue passivated steel, and consist of a threaded upper sleeve and a tapped lower sleeve. They are used for leveling, adjusting, and linking operations of smaller dimensioned components.

The fine thread allows precise, stepless setting and locking using a DIN 1810A hook wrench (available separately). An anti-rotation disk serves also as a height limiter for the maximum height. Normally this screw is permanently and securely locked by the static load created when the mounting screw is tightened. If this is not sufficient, the use of a locknut is recommended.

GN 709.1 Clamping Pads with Threaded Stem

Introducing you today to another of our new products, series GN 709.1 Clamping Pads with Threaded Stem.  These RoHS-compliant, metric sized clamping pads have a body made of case hardened steel with a black phosphate finish. The ball is hardened steel with a plain finish. Two types are available: with smooth contact face, or with serrated contact face.

These clamping pads can be used as mobile supports or as a backstop for securing or clamping workpieces. The ball is limited to an angular movement of no more than 9°. A version with serrated tapped ball insert is available upon request.

Lifting and Lashing Products from RUD

We just recently introduced a unique and superb quality series of lifting and lashing products, manufactured by RUD of Germany.  If safety is your priority, these components are unsurpassed and should definitely be your choice!

More than 30 years ago RUD secured its first patents, for both bolt-on and weldable versions of secure lifting eyes. Frequently occurring industrial accidents (caused by broken DIN 580 eyebolts or self-made weld-on sheet metal or wire constructions) had demonstrated the urgency of design changes.

Since the first series production of its weldable and bolt-on load rings, over 100,000 RUD-manufactured load rings have been sold.  Although these products have proved themselves under the toughest conditions, RUD continues to pursue creating even safer and more reliable products. RUD has updated its original types by increasing the working load limit up to 50 metric tons for weldable and up to 150 metric tons for the boltable types.

Until recently, the design of lifting points has not seriously considered the extent to which loads have to be turned and twisted during the handling process. With these turning movements, the loads can be damaged and/or the lifting system can be considerably overloaded. Properly torqued safety hoist rings are ideal for the needs of mold and die manufacturers. When a mold or die must be flipped, the lifting points need to swivel and pivot at the same time.

Hoist rings from RUD use a body, bushing and graphite-based lubricant to allow them to swivel, and an integrated oval or round eye to allow for pivoting. Another lifting point design uses ball bearings in the body to allow for swiveling and an integrated eye to allow for pivoting.

Why are RUD lifting points pink?  The distinct florescent pink powder coating in not only highly visible, it is a heat indicator.  It permanently changes color at increased temperatures. If chain reaches temperatures above 400°C, the color changes to a deep black, indicating that the chain has been over-heated.

GN 350.3 Spherical Leveling Washer Sets

Among our many new products is our series GN 350.3 Spherical Leveling Washer Sets. These metric sized components are available in steel or stainless steel and are RoHS compliant. They were designed to match GN 350 and GN 350.1 leveling sets.

The two spherical washers are used together and cannot be detached from each other. The load bearing capacity is relatively high, not only due to the material quality but also the matched curve of the concave washer. Five different sizes are available, to accommodate bolts from M6 to M35 sizes.

GN 614 series Short Press-Fit Ball Plungers

Today I'm introducing you to our GN 614 Short-Fit Ball Plungers.  These RoHS-compliant plungers are used as detents, as well as for push-on/push-off applications and ejectors. They come in metric sizes, with diameters from 4 to 12 mm.

Four types are offered: a version in all stainless steel; a version with Delrin housing and stainless steel ball and spring; a version with Delrin housing and ball and stainless steel spring; and a version with brass housing and stainless steel ball.

Cleverness with Levers

At J.W. Winco we’re always tickled when we learn someone has found a creative use for our machine components. Recently we spotted a forum post on the site Cinema5D.com, which is directed at filmmakers.

Cinematographer Hal Davey shared his clever use of our WN 300 plastic adjustable levers (specifically part number 6T16F36O) to create adjustable “legs” for a camera slider rail. Hal posted:

“These neat looking legs are glass filled nylon adjustable Levers from J.W. Winco, Inc. They are available in black or orange for $5.95 each including shipping!


“I had to tap the rail for 3/8" x 16 threads. You screw the lever into the rail (3/8" X 16 thread) tightly. Then you can pull the lever outwards against a spring to position the lever into the position you desire. When you release the lever it locks into a toothed ring to hold the position of the lever. The lever shown is the longest available in 3/8" X 16 stud (also available in metric threads).


“You need a nylon spacer 3/4" (about 19mm) by 7/64" thick. The spacer is needed as there is a 1/4" unthreaded shoulder on the lever stud. You should be able to find the spacers at your local hardware store.”

Hal went on to answer a few questions, explaining the appropriateness of our part for this application. The levers are sturdy enough to easily handle the weight of Hal’s 1200 mm rail along with the camera, carriage and mount. The nylon levers won’t mar floors, and they rotate easily out of the way. Best of all, he points out that this solution saved him $200 over the cost of the traditional legs you see here!

GN 339 Steel Leveling Mounts

Today we're taking a look at our GN 339 Steel Leveling Mounts. These mounts are RoHS compliant and come in metric sizes. They are used for applications where no jointed link is required between the base and stud.


The base has a straight knurl for quick and easy adjustment. The mounts are made of zinc plated steel with a blue passivated finish, with an ISO 4035 hex nut of the same material. Two options of pads are offered: a gliding pad of white Technopolymer Polyacetal (POM) and a non-skid pad of black Technopolymer rubber (TPE), 73 shore hardness. Both types are firmly embedded in the base.

GN 323.8 Black Aluminum Disk Handwheels for Position Indicators

Our featured product of the day is our GN 323.8 Black Aluminum Disk Handwheels for Position Indicators.

These RoHS-compliant, metric sized handwheels are designed with a circular recess to accept EN 000.8 position indicators (also available). The hub dimensions (connection dimension) correspond to those of GN 323 and DIN 950 handwheels. Versions with and without revolving handle are offered.

The handwheel body is gravity die-cast aluminum with machined hub and a matte black plastic coated finish. The rim is turned on all sides, concentric and square to bore. The revolving handle is black technopolymer plastic. An M4 set screw comes with the handwheel to secure the position indicator in place.

Zinc Die Cast Adjustable Alignment Hinges

Today we're showing off our GN 238 Zinc Die Cast Adjustable Alignment Hinges with Cover Caps.

These RoHS-compliant, metric sized hinges are designed so as to allow a technically and visually perfect alignment of the door to its frame. They are available with both sides adjustable (Type BJ), one side adjustable (Type EJ), and fixed hole type (Type NJ). The steel adjustable bushing has a serrated ring on its bottom side that seats into the radially positioned serrations of the zinc hinge plate when the countersunk screw is tightened. This secures the bushing in place. The plastic cover hides the adjustable bushing and screw to prevent dirt from entering, and also provides a clean, appealing look.

The hinge body is zinc die-cast with a black powder coated finish. The adjustable bushings are blackened steel. Hinge pin is stainless steel and hinge cover is dark gray plastic.

Leadership in Wind Energy

The great thing about our business at J.W. Winco is that we get to sell components to every possible industry. When a new industry rises to the fore, odds are good that industry will need our parts. It can be quite exciting!

A great illustration of this is that recent upstart, windpower. What only a few years ago was a novelty is now becoming a valid and essential part of the world's energy resources. And a key component to wind turbines is something so simple it has been around since the earliest years of the Industrial Age: the washer. Well, that simplicity can be deceptive: when you're talking about something as large and carefully engineered as a wind turbine, you're going to need washers of excellent design and quality.

GN 509 Steel and Stainless Steel Ball Transfer Units

Recently added to our product offering are GN 509 Steel and Stainless Steel Ball Transfer Units.

These metric sized components are typically used on conveyor tracks, to enable a linear or rotary movement of heavy loads on those tracks. Three different versions are available: Type SBL, with a housing made of zinc plated, blue passivated sheet steel and a ball of plain finish steel; Type SNI, with a housing made of zinc plated, blue passivated sheet steel and a stainless steel ball; and Type NNI, with housing and ball both made of stainless steel. All types are RoHS compliant. The transfer units have a load capacity of 500 to 2000 N, depending upon size and type.

MN 140 Pneumatic Power Clamps

Back in October we talked about our very cool Pneumatic Power Clamps manufactured by Misati, S.L. (If you missed that post, it's here.) Since that report, we have added another version of these patented, smaller profile, high clamping force, super-efficient clamps.

The MN 140 series of fastening clamps differs from other models in that the two arms exert an outward force from the center. The RoHS-compliant, metric size clamps are made of C45 hardened steel with a black oxide finish. They have a maximum pressure of 10 bar and work pressure of 6 bar.

As with the other types of Misati power clamps in J.W. Winco’s line, they can be combined with a complete selection of accessories to accommodate any application. Check out the entire line in Section 15 of our online catalog.

GN 923 and 924 Flat-Faced Aluminum Handwheels

We're pretty excited about our new series GN 923 and GN 924 Flat-Faced Aluminum Handwheels, a new modern design that has us quite impressed.

GN 923 handwheels are solid disk, while GN 924 are two-spoked. Both types are available with or without revolving handles, as well as in versions with recessed locking retractable handles and recessed safety retractable handles. All types are RoHS compliant and come in both inch and metric sizes.

These handwheels are distinguished by their modern, flat-faced design and their recessed handles. The handwheel body is pressure die-cast aluminum with powder coated matte black pebble finish or silver textured finish. Rim is concentric and square to bore. The revolving handle is matte black nylon plastic hand piece with zinc plated steel threaded spindle. The removable plastic cover shrouds the assembly hardware such as screws and countersunk washers, as well as the shaft end.

How to Punch a Square Hole in Sheet Metal

My weekly googlings recently turned up a fun reference to J.W. Winco. Apparently our website was used as a source for an eHow article on punching square holes in sheet metal.

The key to the whole business, as so often in life, is having the right tool. If you happen to have a punch press and a square punch and die set, you’re good to go. But if you only need to punch a couple of holes on the rare occasion, that’s a prohibitively expensive investment.

The answer is our series GN 123 sheet metal punch, pictured here. This hardened steel punch is capable of penetrating sheet metal up to 2 mm thick. GN 123 punches are available in two sizes, to create square holes that will accommodate 14 or 22 mm.

We offer this tool in conjunction for use in installing our door locks GN 115, GN 115.1 and GN 119. But as the eHow article explains, some automotive parts require a square pass-through hole in either a sheet metal panel or other metal component.

After marking the center of the spot where you want the hole (using black marker on a piece of masking tape), you’ll need to drill a pilot hole. The mandrel of the punching tool is inserted in the pilot hole. You’ll use a ratchet wrench with the punch to drive the square die through the sheet metal.

GN 743.6 Metric Sized ATEX Explosive Protective Fluid Level Sight Glasses

Today we're showing off our new series GN 743.6 Metric Sized ATEX Explosive Protective Fluid Level Sight Glasses.

The RoHS-compliant sight glasses have a body of turned aluminum, bright finish, an ESG scratch-proof glass sight glass, a stainless steel retaining ring, and a seal of FPM rubber (Viton®).

These sight glasses are suitable for use in explosion risk environments, and comply with European 94/9/EG guidelines. They are sealed with an O-ring on the periphery and not on the face edge of the glass. Leak tightness is therefore not affected by axial pressures. The seal is housed in a groove and therefore cannot be lost. Meanwhile, this groove prevents the seal from being extruded when the sight glass is tightened. The location of this seal also allows the use of a softer Elastomer, guaranteeing better and easier sealing. Cold/heat resistance range is -20°C (-4°F) to 150°C (300°F).
